This year we had 10 student paintings in the SFUSD Arts Festival at the Asian Art Museum! The paintings were from an assignment where students picked a social issue that they felt was affecting their world or community and created a poster with an original slogan showing their feelings on the issue. This project was done in the 7th and 8th grade Beginning Art classes.

The 8th Grade Advanced Art class made a mural about the 14th Amendment along with muralist, Sammy Dominguez. Students learned about the 14th Amendment from our librarian, Ms. Taylor as well as historic cases that were won because of it. Students picked one of the cases and worked in groups to design an image to represent that case. They then worked with Sammy to create a design that incorporated their images along with his and then everyone worked on painting it.
In this project from the 8th grade Advanced Art Class students explored their own cultural identities from the past and present. They researched art from their culture in the past and juxtaposed it with something from their personal culture in the present. Juxtaposition is putting different things together to show their similarities and differences or to create and interesting and thought provoking effect.
All of my 7th and 8th grade students work on this altar for Dia de los Muertos or Day of the Dead. Students in my beginning classes picked a person who had passed away and made a drawing with images representing that person and overlaid a drawing of that person's face on a piece of plastic over that drawing. Students in my advanced class picked a person who had passed away and made a skeleton of them and put them in a box that represents them. Then all students helped make paper marigold flowers and papel picado to decorate the altar. It looks fantastic!
We did a very different kind of silk screening for this project because we didn't have the facilities to do traditional silk screening. Students were allowed to pick what ever kind of image they wanted for their silk screened t-shits as long as it was original. They began stretching a piece of silk over an embroidery hoop and tracing the image they had drawn onto the silk. They then painted the screen everywhere that they wanted to remain white on their t-shirt using acrylic paint. After doing a test print on paper, the students printed on their t-shirts.
Work by Arjan Sierra, Jose Gonzalez, and Calista Casanas was shown at the SFUSD Arts Festival at the Asian Art Museum.
Students created an original character and came up with a back story for them. They then made their figure using Sculpey clay and a wire armature. Lastly, they made packaging for their action figure that included the backstory for their character.
Students were asked to envision a possible future for the world and create a stop motion animation of the story they came up with. Some students worked in groups and others worked individually. After finishing filming and editing, students wrote a press release and created a movie poster to advertise for their film.
