This year we had to do things a little differently and make our Dia de los Muertos altar digitally. The Advanced Art Class built a website with artwork honoring those who have passed away made by all the 7th and 8th grade Art Classes as well as some work from the 7th and 8th grade Spanish classes. Check it out here: https://sites.google.com/sfusd.edu/vvms-altar/home

Well, it's been a strange end to the year but the students have been making some really amazing work about how they have been during the school closures. This years fantastic Dia de los Muertos Altar is up. Each student picked a person to honor for their project. The 6th graders made abstract drawings the represent their person which they then overlaid with a drawing of their persons face. The 7th graders drew things that represented their person which they overlaid with their persons face. The beginning 8th grade class made large paper skulls and the 8t grade Advanced class made mini box altars with drawn portraits of their person and skulls. They also put together all the altars. For this project, students were asked to envision a possible future for the world. They brainstormed ideas for what could happen in the future to change the world then came up with a story to exist within the future world they created. They learned the different parts of a story and wrote their story and made story boards. After making all the sets and characters out of paper, they shot their film and edited it. Lastly, they made movie posters and a press release to advertise their films.

The students put a lot of work into these projects honoring people who have passed away. Altars included drawings of people who had passed from the 7th grade art students and shoe box altars including portraits and skulls made by the 8th art students. As well as decorations made by both grades.
Amazing artwork from the second semester of the Advanced Art Class. Includes the Thematic Art Project, Screen Printing and the Final Project.
Here is a look at the work done by the Beginning Art classes the second semester this year. Projects include the action figures, perspective drawing, and printmaking.
For this mural the 7th grade Beginning Art classes learned about migration, immigration and symbols that are used to represent them, like the butterfly. Thanks again to Ms. Taylor for leading these lessons. The students then chose images of butterflies to use for the mural and cut out stencils of them. They also came up with ideas for a phrase that we could use on the mural and decided on "Migration is Natural." They then used water based spray paints and their stencils to paint the butterflies on the wall so they look like they are flying up the staircase and painted their phrase in 4 different languages.
First we looked at how the human body has been used in art and the symbolism for different hand symbols and body language. Then students came up with an idea for a figurative sculpture. Students worked individually or in groups to create life size sculptures using their bodies and packing tape. They wrapped their bodies in plastic wrap then added a few layers of packing tape. After carefully cutting the tape off their bodies they would tape the pieces together then they installed them throughout the school. You can see that we had a lot of fun with this project.
